Valpairiso, Chile

Dec. 2008, Chile

This seaside town on the coast just west of Santiago is a favorite amoung chileans and tourists alike. The thousands of multicoloured houses tumble down the steep hillside to the meet the sea, where the town center streches out alongside the docks, and ships unload equally colourfull containers from all over the world. The whole town is vibrant, artistic souls from all over the world stop for a bit longer than they planned to here, and contribute to the bohemian way of life that defines Valpairiso. Every wall is a canvas, every abandoned house a studio. There are always concerts, street theatre and dances going on in the streets, and getting lost in the many hidden passages and stairways that run between the houses is better than going to any art gallery. I had two short trips here, one which coincided with Christmas, that was spent with a group of similarly familiy deprived people, artists and the like based in Valpairiso. A festive evening, that gave me a glimpse of life in a place that I could very easily have spent more time in.
